What Causes Yeast Infections In Babies?
If your young child has a yeast infection, then it is important to understand what causes yeast infections in babies. This problem is not as common in babies, but can be just as severe as in adults or older children. It can cause various symptoms, with some being quite similar to those present in adults. Babies need to be treated carefully, as their young skin, age and size means that treatments used in older children and adults are not suitable.
How yeast infections develop in babies
What causes yeast infections in babies is the same organism that causes it in adults. The most common way in which the baby will develop a yeast infection is if they contract the Candida albicans fungus from their mother during childbirth. This is an unfortunate situation that can arise if the mother has an infection and delivers the child naturally. In this case, both the mother and the baby should receive treatment to clear the infection away. Getting advice from the baby’s paediatrician is advisable, as a newborn will need careful monitoring if they require any form of medication.
Symptoms of yeast infection in babies
The symptoms of a yeast infection in a baby are usually present on the skin and they are also likely to occur in the mouth. If you believe that your baby may be suffering a yeast infection, then the following are the most common signs and symptoms to look out for:
- If the yeast infection is in the mouth, then it will appear as patches of white in the cheeks, on the tongue and on the roof of the mouth.
- Skin yeast infections are usually like a rash, with multiple red bumps, pus filled lumps, scaly patches and generally inflamed skin.
Mistaking a yeast infection for nappy rash
If you are aware of what causes yeast infections in babies, then you know that damp, warm areas can be an ideal place for the infection to develop. It is therefore important that you are careful not to mistake a yeast infection for a nappy rash. A nappy rash develops under the same conditions in which a yeast infection thrives. The moisture that your child’s nappy traps is a perfect location in which the Candida can increase in numbers rapidly.
How to treat yeast infection in babies
To treat a yeast infection, it helps to first know what causes yeast infections in babies. If your baby has a yeast infection that you perhaps initially believed to be nappy rash, then you should consult your doctor or the baby’s paediatrician. Your child may need to get some treatment that should be provided under medical supervision. I f a yeast infection occurs in the nappy area, make sure you also keep the area as clean and dry as possible, by changing their nappies regularly. If the yeast infection occurs in the mouth, it may be necessary to get some help from the doctor, an infant nurse or a lactation specialist, to establish if there is another underlying problem leading to the infection.
If you understand what causes yeast infections in babies, then you will be in a good position to seek out the best treatment option for your child and help provide them with every extra form of assistance that you can offer.
