Reoccuring Yeast Infections After Period
What can be done about a reoccuring yeast infection?
I am 19 years old. And I am married. Every month right after my period I get a yeast infection. What can be done to prevent these darn things. I heard perfumed tampons will do it, so I quit using them. Then I heard dushing isnt good, so I quit that, but still its reoccuring. PLEASE HELP!!!!
It is not just perfumed tampons it is any tampon as tampons prevent normal vaginal cleaning functions, give bacteria a place to multiply and in the case of commercial tampons they also contain chemicals that will affect normal vaginal pH. This is also true of commercial pads, these not only contain chemicals but also due to synthetic materials they prevent aeration making your vulva a moist warm sweaty place where yeast and bacteria can grow out of control. If you have reoccurring infections it is best you choose safer menstrual options such as menstrual cups, softcups, organic pads, cloth pads or free-flow methods.
I believe you mean douching, yes again this will contribute to infections as well as contribute to other issues that can effect vaginal health such as increased risk of STD’s and deeper infections that can cause problems with your fertility. It is not just douching, anything chemical you put into your vagina will affect your vaginal pH, when this is affected it means that in turn the normal vaginal flora are also then knocked out of balance which is what causes such infections. All you should ever wash with it just plain water, using your hands to wipe between your inner labia to remove dirt, soaps or feminine washes are very common causes of vaginal infections, you may also want to watch out for other possible causes such as bubble baths, detergents, and anything that could come in contact with your vagina.
Menstruation can bring about infections, not just because many menstrual options can be harmful to vaginal health but also because of menstruation itself. Menstrual blood is actually a different pH to your normal vaginal environment so if your normal vaginal pH is a little off this could push it over the edge, menstrual blood is also very nutritious so a big plus for bacteria and yeast present in the vagina. As a side note semen is also a different pH so can also trigger off infections, some women simply have bad reactions to their partners semen, even if they were fine with other partners semen.
Yeast infections are not complicated things, reoccurring cases are more often than not due to something you are doing that could harm vaginal health – using tampons, using soap to wash with, wearing tight clothing, wearing synthetic clothing, wearing g-strings, etc. However there are cases when there is something more serious going on, for example chronic yeast infections are often signs of diabetes (side note – avoid alcohol and sugars when you have a yeast infection). As such it is important you see a doctor, although many doctors are ignorant about a lot of things regarding female sexual health they should be able to look into a few things to rule them out, such as diabetes and gut health, which can also affect vaginal infections.
You may want to work at improving the balance of bacteria and yeast in your vagina; yogurt is always suggested because live pro-biotic yogurt contains lactobacillus acidophilus that is bacteria naturally found in healthy vaginas, it produces hydrogen peroxide that helps to kill off excessive yeast in your vagina. It can be eaten of course to introduce this ‘good’ bacteria into your gut, but also put plain yogurt into your vagina before bed (good hint – freeze yogurt into little suppositories to avoid mess), washing out in the morning, will also help – make sure it is plain pro-biotic yogurt and not sweetened (the sugars would feed the yeast). Drinking cranberry juice, again important to get unsweetened, will help you too. Another idea is tea tree oil used as preventative yeast treatment, just a few drops into your vagina should help kill off yeast and ‘bad’ bacteria, although be careful not to use too much as it may sting, garlic also has similar properties when a clove is inserted into the vagina (eating can also help), although if you have a husband this may not be the best aphrodisiac ;oP
As a side note I’d strongly suggest looking around online not just for information on yeast infections but also general vaginal health, at 19 years old and married you should already know a lot of these things – i.e. tampons and douching = bad for vaginal health, it is your responsibility to care for your sexual health.
