Question about cleaning Chihuahua ears and infections?

My roommates Chihuahua’s ears smell gross and deep inside there is brown crap. I can’t describe the smell. Should I tell her they need to be cleaned or does this sound like an infection? Possibly a yeast infection? Or is this normal? Is this common in Chihuahuas? His ears aren’t bothering him, he never rubs or scratches them.

Yeast infections and most other ear infections are extremely itchy – It is likely that the puppy just needs a serious ear cleaning. Brown ear wax naturally builds up over time and some dogs have overactive glands that make it even harder to keep up. Chihuahuas are not a common breed for overactive glands (think cocker spaniels and other breeds with thick, hairy ears) but it can occur in any breed.

Once his ears are cleaned, if it comes back quickly and still smells, it would be a good idea to have it checked out by a vet and have them do a culture.
