Skin Yeast Infection – What You Need to Know About Treating One
Skin yeast infections are mainly caused by one of the strains of the Candida species of fungus, the most common of which is the Candida albicans strain. It is normal for multiple micro-organisms to constantly be living on the surface of the skin; some of these are actually a good thing and many of them have no purpose. Some of these organisms become a threat to our health when a problem occurs that allows them to multiply and cause an infection. This is what happens to the fungus on our skin that causes skin yeast infections.
The skin and mucous membranes of the body are susceptible to yeast infections but the fungus mostly attacks the warm and moist areas like underarms, groin, mouth, folds of the skin, under the breasts, genitals etc. If you notice irritation in these areas, it could indicate a yeast infection.
Some people are more predisposed to getting a skin yeast infection than others. Those who have systemic disorders and auto-immune disease are particularly susceptible. Others also prone include babies who are in diapers, women who are on a contraceptive pill, overweight children and adults, pregnant women, and people who work in continually wet conditions. Antibiotic drugs can also lead to susceptibility to yeast infections.
Symptoms of skin yeast infections include itching, redness, swelling, soreness, discharge, blisters and scaling of the skin and affected areas. People describe their symptoms as mildly irritating to uncomfortable in the extreme, and every stage in between. A diagnosis can be made by looking at the affected area or a scraping can be taken and sent away to a pathology laboratory for analysis.
Yeats infections of the skin and mucous membranes are varied, but some of the more common ones are Thrush in the mouth and throat; Vaginitis; Intertrigo of the skin, usually affecting folds of skin and underarms etc. and Jock Itch; Athletes Foot or Tinea; nail infections and those that attack the skin between the fingers, common in people whose work is in wet areas; nappy rash.
Treatment is usually by means of medication that is easy to buy and comes in the form of a cream or lotion, a suppository or an oral tablet. Any of the brands available will usually clear the condition, though it may reappear. There are several natural or alternative treatments that are popular as well and since a yeast infection indicates and imbalance in your system you would be well advised to adopt a healthy lifestyle as well.
Good general hygiene and maintaining good health are excellent preventative measures against repeated attacks of skin yeast infections. Make sure the affected or prone areas are regularly washed and properly dried; wear cotton underwear and clothing on that part of the body to allow the skin to breathe and keep dry. Avoid sharing towels, wear sandals and leather or canvas shoes in preference to joggers where possible and change socks and wet clothes as soon as possible. Babies should not be allowed to stay in wet diapers. After applying an anti-fungal cream, always wash your hands thoroughly to prevent spreading the infection.
