Yeast Infections Toddlers
Toddler with Chronic Yeast Infections?
My 14 month old son is constantly getting yeast infections. He’s had a least 5 of them in the last 6 months. I’ve tried everything I can think of and they just keep coming back. I usually fight them with prescription creams and he gets better after about 7 days. Then a week later its back again. I change him every 2-3 hours and immediately whenever he has a dirty diaper. Nystatin didn’t work at all for him. My doctor also prescribed Vusion ointment which worked great the first couple of times but it seems to work less the more I use it. Last time I used it, it took 14 days for the infection to completley subside. I’ve also tried baking soda baths, leaving him out of diapers when possible (although now that he’s walking that’s really not practical at all unless I want to throw out all my carpets), vaseline, boudreaux’s butt cream…nothing seems to help. He’s not too fond of yogurt but has a very health diet otherwise. Any advice would be helpful!
Have you tried cutting out all perfumed or scented products – including your laundry soap and dryer sheets?? Something could be irritating his skin, and then leading to a yeast infection if the skin gets rashy and raw. I’m sure you have tried switching diapers already.
You may need to change him even more frequently. It might help to buy the store brand pull-ups with the little pictures on them that fade – and let him run around in them without pants at home, so you can see immediately when he is wet.
Also – have you had his urine and blood tested? Sugar feeds yeast. Sugar in the urine could contribute to yeast infections. It’s something I would have done to be on the safe side – just to rule it out.
If he consumes large amounts of juice or sugary foods (healthy like fruits, or otherwise) – try cutting this down as well, because this can increase sugar in otherwise normal urine.
You may also want to try looking up more homepathic, natural methods. You will find lots if you look up your typical female yeast infection, most of the things could be adapted to use topically on the skin.
